THETA Corporation (Head Office: Nakano Ward, Tokyo; President Masahiko Suzuki, hereinafter, "THETA") and Pico (Head Office: Beijing, China; CEO: Zhou Hongwei, hereinafter, "Pico") have joined hands for the planning, shooting, and delivery of live-action VR content.
Pico is a company specializing in VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality). While using the latest technologies, it manufactures and develops hardware and software. To provide users with the best VR and AR experience, Pico offers its products, services, and solutions to not only China, but also to Asia, North America, and Europe.
THETA is a company specializing in the planning, shooting, and editing of high-quality, live-action VR videos. They have high-sensitivity cameras developed in-house (patent pending) for shooting very steady stereoscopic videos. It started EINYME (https://einy.me/) in July 2016, a VR content delivery platform to generate fan business.
■ Background of this joint project
While China has many head-mounted displays (hereinafter, "HMD") for VR content, Pico has developed its own standalone "Pico neo" as an integrated VR display. Specifications-wise, it is well-suited for the high-quality, live-action VR content that THETA produces.
Pico is also developing a wide variety of content. With its Pico VR app, it has teamed up with 華数 TV to deliver over 300 original 3D movies, over 70 live TV channels, and high-quality video content. Amid the lack of live-action VR content, Pico is inclined toward top-quality VR experience.
This joint project will have THETA-produced live-action VR content featuring Japanese pop idols, pinup models, and artists to be delivered by the Pico VR app.
This joint project will have VR content planned and produced by THETA in Japan to be delivered by the Pico VR app. It is to reach many more users to see and experience the content. THETA is also preparing to film actresses, models, etc., cast in China and have the resulting content jointly delivered by the platforms of both companies.
The first installment will be "Idol VR content" to be distributed on November 14th, 2016. The second installment will be the world's first 180° Stereo VR music video.
With THETA's high-performance HMD manufacturing technologies and Pico's own platform in China, the two companies will speed up the production and delivery of live-action VR videos in Asia and conduct joint research on high-quality VR content production.
